Modern Classics from Denmark

The Danish Arts Foundation has established an initiative to promote 10 outstanding Danish modernist novels from the 1970s to today.

These significant works, which draw inspiration from world literature – especially the French nouveau roman – expand and challenge the limits and possibilities of storytelling in fiction. If they had not been written in Danish at a time when the literary exchange between Denmark and the world was much more limited than it is today, these novels most probably would have made an international impact.

Extensive English sample translations available

The Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Literary Project Funding has provided for extensive English sample translations for five of these books, and the Committee encourages foreign publishers, who wish to publish the selected books to apply for support for the translation fees. In order to qualify, the works must be translated directly from Danish by a recognized translator, and the translation fee must fall within the normal range.

Apply for translation fee grants

Interested publishers shall refer to the Danish publisher for purchase of rights, and publishers can apply for translation fee grants through the fund “Danish literature abroad and foreign literature in Denmark".
