Visual Arts: International Research Programme
Funding for curatorial research for curators, directors of art institutions and other art professionals.
Change of year procedure: Applications submitted after 31 October 2021 will not be processed until mid-January 2022.
Who may apply?
- Danish and international curators, directors of art institutions and other art professionals working with contemporary art through professional curating, art criticism, art mediation, or who can demonstrate substantial experience in one of the areas mentioned.
- Danish curators, directors of art institutions and other art professionals may apply for funding for travel and accommodation abroad.
- Curators, directors of art institutions and other art professionals from abroad may apply for funding for travel and accommodation in Denmark.
- Artists may only apply for funding, if their trip concerns curatorial research and they can document significant curatorial experience.
Furthermore, the programme is primarily aimed at applicants who already have contacts on the Danish art scene or candidates who wish to develop a project involving specific Danish artists or institutions. Applicants must be able to organize meetings and studio visits on their own.
You cannot receive funding for:
- travels related to participation at international art fairs, biennales, etc.
- per diems, local transport, etc. The committee only funds travel and accommodation. However, foreign applicants from the UN list of Least Developed Countries may apply for per diems. Find the current list here.
Purpose of the program
The Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding wishes to promote contemporary art in Denmark and Danish contemporary art abroad by allowing foreign curators to meet Danish artists and gain insight into the Danish contemporary art scene with a view to future collaborations.
Furthermore, the committee wishes to promote contemporary art in Denmark by allowing Danish curators to meet foreign contemporary artists and gain insight into foreign contemporary art scenes with a view to future collaborations.
How your application will be evaluated?
Your application will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- The research trip must as far as possible be linked to specific future projects relating to professional curating, art criticism or art mediation.
- The visit must promote and strengthen the international networks of Danish artists and/or Danish art institutions
- The visit must play a decisive role in promoting awareness abroad of Danish artists and/or Danish art institutions
- The visit must promote specific collaborations between the Danish and foreign art scenes.
If you have applied for grants from the Danish Arts Foundation within the past three years, this information will be considered in the evaluation of your application.
What must the application contain
You must submit your application using our digital application form found via the link on this page. We do not accept paper forms.
However, at the bottom of the page, you will find the application form as a PDF. Use this to familiarize yourself with the content and make sure you are ready with all the required information and documents, before filling in the actual application form. The digital application form has a 15-minute session timeout, so you need to fill it in rather quickly.
We recommend you to use the browsers Chrome or Firefox when you fill in the application form.
You must attach the following:
- Mandatory annex containing: Project description, day program and budget. Download the required template here
- CV detailing your curatorial practice
- For applicants with foreign bank accounts, a completed bank information form, either the form for wire transfers to countries using IBAN or the form for wire transfers to countries NOT using IBAN
In the mandatory annex you must describe why you want to carry out the given research trip and how you think the trip contributes to promoting contemporary art in Denmark and/or Danish contemporary art abroad
You must also state the specific goals planned for your research trip, for example specific meetings with named artists, curators, directors of art institutions or others who work professionally with contemporary art. If we ask you to report on your project, we will evaluate whether you have fulfilled the goals stated in your application.
Additionally you must outline a programme for the trip which clarifies what specific meetings and activities you have planned. Finally you must include a budget, specifying the prices you have found for travel and accommodation.

If you apply for funding for the same project from other Danish Arts Foundation committees, you have to state this in your application.
Please be aware of the following:
- The total size of the attached files may not exceed 15 MB.
- We accept the document formats PDF, Word, and Excel. We do not accept ZIP files.
- You are not able to edit an application once you have submitted it. If your application is incomplete, you must submit a new and complete application before the deadline.
- The committee will process the most recently submitted application.
- Your application must include all the required attachments in order to be processed by the committee.
- You are responsible for ensuring that your application has been filled in correctly and that all required attachments are included. Please check your email receipt for a list of the documents attached to your submitted application.
How much you may apply for?
The maximum grant amount is DKK 15,000 to cover travel and accommodation costs.
Both travel and accommodation must be budgeted as "Economy Class". The duration of a typical research trip is 3-7 days. However, you may also apply for longer stays provided that you have arranged the accommodation yourself.

If you are a Danish citizen, organisation, or business and receive a grant, you must have a NemKonto available for the payment transfer. We transfer all grants to the NemKonto linked to the Danish CPR/CVR number you state in the application. If you, for example, apply with a new CVR number, you have to make sure that you have linked it to a NemKonto. You have to do this before a potential grant is awarded.
If you have moved out of Denmark according to the Danish Customs and Tax Administration’s definition, or if you are a foreign applicant, you are able to have a potential grant transferred to a foreign bank account. For applicants with foreign bank accounts, a completed bank information form must be attached, either the form for wire transfers to countries using IBAN or the form for wire transfers to countries NOT using IBAN.
If the committee decides to award you a grant, you will receive the money as soon as possible.
We report the grant to the Danish Tax Agency, but tax has not been deducted from the payment.
You will receive the committee’s decision via email within 3 weeks after you have submitted your application.
Throughout those days, we will read and process your application. We publish all awarded grants on our website (in Danish), once the applicants have received the committee’s decision.
Please note that you cannot expect a decision during July.
Applications must be submitted no later than 15 November 2020 if they are to be processed in 2020. Applications submitted after 15 November will not recieve an answer until mid-January 2021.
The names of all applicants are made public on our website in the committees’ minutes (in Danish).
When you have submitted your application
When you have submitted your application, you will receive an email receipt with your application number. Remember to state your application number if you contact us.
In your email receipt, you will also find an overview of the documents attached to your application. It is your responsibility to check that all required documents are submitted, so please check the list to be sure.
Decisions are made in accordance with section 3(1), cf. (2) and (3) of the Danish Act on the Danish Arts Foundation’s Activities (Act no. 458 of 8 May 2013).
When the Danish Arts Foundation awards grants, it is important, and not least legally required, that the money is used for the purpose you have described in your application. Therefore, you must report on your project to the Agency for Culture and Palaces. How you must report depends on the grant amount you have received. Read more about how to report on your project.
Who will evaluate your application?
The Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces’ office for Visual Arts processes the applications and makes the final decision in accordance with the above criteria defined by the Danish Arts Foundation's Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding.
