Danish Poet wins the European Literature Prize 2016
Bjørn Rasmussen wins coveted European Prize for his savage, taboo-breaking debut novel The Skin Is the Elastic Covering that Encases the Entire Body. Following on from the prize, the book has subsequently been sold to 6 different countries.
This Spring, Bjørn Rasmussen (b. 1983) won the 2016 European Union Prize for Literature for his debut novel The Skin Is the Elastic Covering that Encases the Entire Body. The prize is for ‘the best new and emerging authors in Europe’. Following this award, Ramussen’s book has been sold to Turkey, Serbia, Hungary, Macedonia, Sweden and Bulgaria, and several other countries are about to follow suit.
The Skin Is the Elastic Covering that Encases the Entire Body is a coming-of-age novel about a young man looking back on life growing up in rural Denmark.
The fifteen year old Bjørn lives at a riding school in West Jutland with two brothers and a depressed mother. Bjørn is struggling with his closet homosexuality and destructive thoughts, for which he finds release by cutting himself. When Bjørn falls in love with a 20 year older riding instructor, a strange and sadomasochistic love relationship ensues that will have profound consequences.
The idiosyncratic yet highly assured prose and poetry is wild, untrammeled and defies all taboos. And despite its reckless confrontation with despair, it manages to move, fascinate and shock the reader with its glittering, undeniable beauty.
Bjørn Rasmussen received the Montana Literary Award in 2011 and the 2016 European Union Prize for Literature for The Skin Is the Elastic Covering that Encases the Entire Body.
