Danish Art Foundation

Sample Translation Fund

Grants to translators, publishers and foreign theatre companies for the translation of shorter texts.

Deadline

Who may apply?

Foreign translators of fiction, non-fiction and drama, Danish publishers, foreign publishers and literary agencies.

Names of the applicants for The Danish Arts Foundation will be announced on www.danisharts.dk

Purpose of the program

The aim of the fund is to promote a wider knowledge abroad of Danish literature and drama.

The sample translation fund provides financial support for the translation of extracts from Danish literature and sample translation of plays. The translations must be used to present Danish literature and drama to foreign publishers, magazines or theatres.

How your application will be evaluated?

In assessing an application weight is laid on the quality of the work in question and on the translator’s qualifications.

It must be emphasized that the translator’s C.V. is crucial to the assessment of the application. The application must therefore include a relevant, up-to-date C.V. giving details of educational background and all or the main translations into the language in question.

It is typically expected that the translator has experience with translating from the language in question within the genre for which funding is being requested.

In considering applications for the translation of non-fiction the committee’s main criterion is that the work must be of general interest. Grants are not given for the translation of other types of non-fiction, such as educational textbooks. Support is not granted for re-translations.

As a rule, the awarding of a grant is conditional upon the text being translated from the language in which it was originally published into the translator’s own native language. Grants are not given for the translation of an applicant’s own work or for the revision of a text.

The sample translation must not be used for the purpose of the application at the time of applying.

In order to ensure dispersion of the support, as a rule, no more than four applications are supported per translator per year. For publishing houses/literary agents no more than six applications are supported per year. The committee may, however, grant further support to applicants who can document that the support for sample translations has had a genuine effect and has led to the publication of entire works.

Who will evaluate your application?

The application is assessed by the Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Literary Project Funding.

How much you may apply for?

The maximum grant for fiction and non-fiction is DKK 5000.00, to cover the translation of an extract of 10 pages from the work in question together with any eventual synopsis and/or reviews.

The committee reserves the right not to award support to all applicants, who fulfil the criteria of the fund on the basis of a general prioritization regarding that means of support should be beneficial to as many as possible.

The grant will be paid out to the bank account you have specified in your application.

We report the payment to the Danish tax authorities. No tax has been deducted from the amount paid. Grants up till 100.000 DKK will be paid out as close as possible to the start date specified in the application.
