International Research Programme (Visual Arts)

Curators, directors of art institutions and other art professionals from abroad may apply for funding to carry out curatorial research in Denmark.

Deadline

* Note: Summer holidays in July! Please be aware that due to summer holidays in July we cannot reply or pay out any potential grant in July. Applications submitted in July are processed in August. Applications are dealt with as they are received and applicants can expect to receive a reply within two weeks (except for July when no reply can be expected).

Who may apply?

Curators, directors of art institutions and other art professionals from abroad may apply for funding for travel and accommodation in Denmark.

The Research programme is aimed at art professional applicants whose primary occupation is professional curating, art criticism or art mediation, or who can demonstrate substantial experience in one of the areas mentioned.

Moreover, the research programme is primarily aimed at applicants who already have contacts on the Danish art scene or candidates who wish to develop a project involving specific Danish artists or institutions. Applicants must be able to organize meetings and studio visits on their own.

Artists may only apply for funding, if they can document significant curatorial experience or have worked professionally with art mediation.

Purpose of the program

To provide curators from abroad with the opportunity to acquire an insight into contemporary Danish art and the Danish art scene, and to strengthen networking and dialogue between the Danish and the international art scenes.

Travel for participation in art fairs, exhibition openings, seminars etc. is not covered by the program.

How your application will be evaluated?

Your application will be evaluated based on the following criteria. At least one of the criteria must be met:

  • The research trip must as far as possible be linked to specific projects relating to professional curating, art criticism or art mediation.
  • The visit must promote and strengthen the international networks of Danish artists and/or Danish art institutions
  • The visit must play a decisive role in promoting awareness abroad of Danish artists and/or Danish art institutions
  • The visit must promote concrete collaborations between Danish and foreign art

Who will evaluate your application?

Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces’ office for Visual Art assesses the applications according to the above criteria as laid down by the Danish Arts Foundation's Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding.

How much you may apply for?

Applicants can max. be awarded 15,000 DKK, covering the direct costs of travel and accommodation.

Please note, that the Committee reserves the right not to award the full amount requested, based on the overall assessment that the Committee's financial means should benefit as many qualified applicants as possible.

Both travel and accommodation must be budgeted as "Economy Class". Grants are only awarded to cover these two forms of expenditure i.e. not for general living expenses, local transportation, per diem payments etc.*

The Committee for Visual Arts Project Funding reserves the right to award partial grants, if it is assessed that the research trip can be carried out on Economy Class for an amount lower than the one applied for.

The duration of a typical research trip is 3-7 days, however applicants may also be apply for longer stays, provided that the applicant has arranged for accommodation independently.
