Who can apply:
Individuals

Who may apply

Priority is placed on applicants from Denmark’s two schools of architecture and on civil engineering students from the University of Aalborg (department of architecture and design).  One month is reserved, as far as possible, for an international candidate working mainly outside of Denmark who may have some special link with the relevant field or with Jørn Utzon.

Other individuals dealing with architectonic problems as part of a research study or project are also eligible.  So too are artists working, in a broader sense, with architecture – painters, for example, or applied artists and designers.

Purpose of the program

The Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Architecture, together with the Utzon Foundation, wishes to give architects and other individuals working with or interested in the architecture of Jørn Utzon and his work in general the chance to spend some time in residence at Can Lis, Jørn Utzon’s house on Mallorca.

About Can Lis
This house is an ascetic and wholly consistent building which - due to the materials used, its location, its quite unique interiors and distinctive architectonic form - is the perfect place to spend up to three months totally immersed in one’s work.

A residency is available for the following period:
• 1st April – 30th June 2012

The house has just a couple of small bedrooms and is generally speaking quite modestly furnished.  It sits atop a cliff with no fencing or railings around it.  We recommend, therefore, that residents arrange to stay there alone or with a partner.  We do not recommend taking small children to Can Lis.

How your application will be evaluated

In assessing an application priority will be given to residencies which will further the study of, or the promotion of, Jørn Utzon’s work –directly or in a broader sense.  After their stay residents will be asked to submit a brief report on the results of their residency.

The Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Architecture will give priority to applicants wishing to stay for three months and will not grant stays of less than one month.

Who will evaluate your application

The Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Architecture assesses each application on its individual merits.

How much you may apply for

Accommodation at Can Lis is free for the duration of the residency.  Residents are also provided with a travel grant of DKK 5,500 per month from the Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Architecture, to cover general living expenses.  All other costs must be covered by residents themselves.

What the application must contain

The application must contain an explanation of the reasons for the desired residency.

The following files should be attached to the application form:

  • C.V.
  • A detailed description of the purpose of the residency (max. 5 A4 pages)
  • Artistic documentation (e.g. picture files)

Please use the application form provided below and send it  to evajen@kunst.dk.

Once you have submitted the application

Applicants will be advised of the committee’s decision in mid-February 2012.
