Illustrated Children's Books Denmark
“Illustrated Children’s Books Denmark” is an exhibition of picture books for children. The exhibition will tour the world - its mission: to present and promote examples of the cream of Danish illustrated children’s books.
About the exhibition
Thirty different works are featured in the exhibition. The works have all been selected by the Danish Arts Council Committee for Literature, while the Danish Arts Agency’s Literature Centre and the design company NR2154 have been responsible for the practical organisation of the exhibition.
About the works
The thirty selected works should be regarded more as a series of highlights than as a reflection of all Danish children’s literature. In other words: books of special importance which, it is judged, will have an equally important part to play in the future too.
These works range from examples of classic children’s book traditions to those which break completely with tradition – as, for example, do Dorte Karrebæk’s illustrations for such books as Oskar K.’s Hamlet (Dansklærerforeningen, 2009) and Idiot (Høst & Søn, 2009).
The main criterion for inclusion in the exhibition is the graphic impact of the illustrations, but the way in which these interact with the story is also a key parameter. Thought was also given to the way in which the works supplement and complement each other: the quality of the illustrations has to be consistent throughout, to ensure a harmonious overall impression. The illustrations should exploit the story and expand upon it.
